An older cat that becomes withdrawn, restless or less tolerant may be experiencing discomfort or another health change. Do not dismiss a new behaviour as “just getting old”. Veterinary assessment is the starting point for unexplained or persistent changes.
Notice what is different
Compare your cat with their own previous habits rather than a younger animal. Useful observations include avoiding a favourite jump, difficulty entering the tray, grooming less, calling at night or reacting differently to touch. Changes in appetite, drinking and weight are important too.

Prepare for the veterinary conversation
- Note when the change began and whether it is constant or occasional.
- Record eating, drinking, toileting, sleep and movement changes.
- List medication, supplements and recent household changes.
- Take a short video of movement or behaviour if you can do so without disturbing the cat.
- Explain which everyday activities have become harder.
Your vet can investigate possible pain, sensory changes, medical conditions or cognitive problems. These can overlap, so an online checklist cannot identify the cause.
Make the home easier to use
Keep food, water, litter trays and comfortable resting places accessible. A low-entry tray or stable intermediate step may help, depending on the cat's needs. Avoid rearranging all familiar resources at once.
The AAHA/AAFP senior-cat guidance discusses mobility and environmental adaptations. Watch whether another animal blocks a route or disturbs resting places.
Respect comfort and choice
Offer short, gentle play if the cat is interested, and let them rest. Avoid forced handling, massage over painful areas or introducing another pet as a presumed cure for loneliness. Familiar calm company may be more welcome than extra activity.
Use medication only as directed. Do not start human painkillers, supplements or a therapeutic diet without veterinary advice. A “senior” label alone does not determine the right diet for every medical situation.
When help is urgent
Breathing difficulty, collapse, sudden inability to walk or repeated straining without passing urine needs urgent veterinary attention. For less dramatic changes, arrange advice promptly rather than waiting for the next routine appointment.
