Some outdoor cat houses provide simple protection from wind and rain, while others include additional insulation intended to reduce heat loss during colder weather.

Do not assume every enclosed wooden house is insulated. Check the product description for wall construction, insulation materials and any specific cold-weather features.

An insulated shelter can be useful where a cat regularly spends time outside, but owned cats should still have access to a warm indoor environment wherever possible during cold conditions.

Location can make a major difference to how useful the shelter is.

Cats Protection recommends placing outdoor shelters somewhere quiet and protected from the weather, keeping them off the ground and positioning the entrance away from prevailing wind where possible.

Cold-weather shelter should provide somewhere dry, secure and protected from wind and moisture.

Cats Protection advises that cats with outdoor access should ideally be able to return indoors, particularly during colder weather, and recommends waterproof, sturdy outdoor shelter as an additional option rather than a replacement for indoor access.

If you use bedding or insulation inside an outdoor shelter, check it regularly to make sure it has not become damp or frozen.

Bedding needs to remain dry to be useful outdoors.

Cats Protection recommends straw as a practical insulating material for outdoor stray or feral-cat shelters because it is less likely to retain moisture than fabric bedding.

If you use blankets or towels, check them frequently because fabric can absorb moisture and become cold in poor weather.

Always follow the care instructions supplied with the individual cat house, particularly where it contains built-in insulation, cushions or heating components.

Some outdoor cat houses include heating or are designed to work with particular heated pads or accessories.

Only use electrical heating products specifically designed for pets and suitable for the environment in which they will be used.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, protect cables from chewing and weather exposure and do not add improvised electrical heaters to a wooden shelter.

If you are unsure whether a heating product is appropriate for your cat, ask your vet or the product manufacturer before use.

They serve different purposes, although some larger designs combine both.

Larger cats need enough internal room to enter, turn and lie down comfortably.

Check the entrance dimensions as well as the overall external measurements. A large-looking house can still have an entrance or internal sleeping area that is too small for a bigger cat.

Where a product has more than one level, porch or sleeping compartment, also consider whether the routes between those areas suit your cat’s size and mobility.

Some larger shelters and multi-room houses may accommodate more than one cat, but suitability depends on the design and on whether the cats are comfortable sharing enclosed space.

In multi-cat households, providing more than one sheltered resting option can reduce competition and allows individual cats to choose where they feel most comfortable.

Check internal dimensions and entrances rather than relying only on product names such as “family”, “double” or “multi-room”.

A suitable outdoor shelter can provide temporary protection for a cat that genuinely needs somewhere dry and protected.

However, an unfamiliar cat visiting your garden may already have an owner. Before assuming the cat is homeless, check for identification, ask locally and arrange a microchip scan where possible.
