There are several reasons why a cat likes to scratch. For example, they do this to sharpen their nails, just like we like to get a manicure. When scratching, the outer, damaged layer of the nail peels off. The new, sharper layer underneath is exposed. By scratching, that top layer will fall off, giving them a new, beautiful, but above all sharp nail. Sharpening the nails allows them to climb better. The cat is and remains a real hunter, their nails are their most important weapon.

Not in my territory
Cats also scratch to show that they are in charge of the house. There are scent glands in their claws, which release a certain scent while scratching. People don’t smell it, but other cats immediately know who’s in charge of the house because of the smell.
Even if your cat sits on your lap and starts scratching or dabbing with her paws, she’s doing it to release a scent. May seem very cute, but often they do this again to mark their territory. In short, your cat is actually the boss in the house, not the other way around.
Stretch
Cats also need relaxation from time to time. Again, scratching is perfect for that. While scratching, the cats stretch their entire body and muscles, which is not only good for the flexibility of the body, but also for their mind. They will be able to move faster (here come the zoomies) and will also be able to react faster to unexpected situations. That way they are better able to catch prey. A cat tree would therefore be very useful for your cat to fully enjoy it.
Be there in time
A scratching post is not only useful for large or adult cats, kittens also benefit from it. A kitten must be able to scratch and climb sufficiently during its development in order to train its balance and responsiveness. So don’t wait too long, otherwise your kitten will soon be hanging in the furniture!
How do you solve it now?
A scratching post is therefore a really good idea if you are tired of punishing your cat for something he really needs. Scratching is a form of communication, an expression of an emotion. So more than usual!

Every scratching post is different, just like every cat. One cat is a fan of our BOLD PAW while the other prefers our large cat trees.
There are several factors to consider before purchasing a scratching post. The breed, the length of your cat, the condition, … So think carefully before you impulsively ordered one! Some cats like to scratch horizontally, others vertically. A tall cat needs a tall, large pole to stretch out completely, while small breeds don’t.
So observe your cat before you proceed with the order. That way, you’ll both be happy with your purchase! Are you curious about our collection of scratching posts?
