A cat may use a second-hand scratching post, but acceptance is not guaranteed. Its condition, texture, position and previous use all matter. Before considering whether your cat will like it, decide whether you can inspect and clean it adequately.
Ask about its history
Find out why it is being passed on, where it has been stored and whether it came from a household with a known infectious disease or parasite problem. If the history is uncertain or there is a health concern, ask your vet before bringing it into the home. A low purchase price is not worthwhile if cleaning or replacing components makes it unsuitable.
Request the model name, assembly instructions and original fixings. Check whether replacement parts are still available. Do not assume a bolt that happens to fit is the correct length or specification.
Inspect it before collection
- Check the base and platforms for cracks, swelling, dampness and distortion.
- Look for exposed staples, screws, sharp edges and loose rope.
- Check posts and joints for movement or stripped connections.
- Examine fabric seams and hidden areas, not just the visible surfaces.
- Make sure the usable scratching area and any beds suit your cat's size and mobility.
Reject a structure with damage you cannot confidently assess or repair. New rope can refresh a sound post, but it does not strengthen a failing core.
Be realistic about cleaning
Follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions for each material. Removable covers may be washable; absorbent cores and permanently upholstered sections can be much harder to clean thoroughly. Avoid soaking materials that can swell or trapping moisture inside padding.
Use only an appropriate cleaning method, keep your cat away during treatment and allow the item to dry fully. Strong fragrance is not evidence of hygiene. If you need disease-specific disinfection, get veterinary advice; ordinary surface cleaning should not be presented as a guarantee.
Introduce it without pressure
Put the post somewhere useful, preferably near an existing scratching or resting area, while keeping familiar alternatives available. Let your cat approach at their own pace. Do not rub their paws on it, punish avoidance or remove every other scratcher to force a choice.
A little voluntary play nearby can make the location interesting. Change one thing at a time if it is ignored: position, orientation or surface may be the issue. A cat that prefers a flat pad may have little interest in an upright post, however clean it is.
When buying new may be simpler
