It is very important to ensure that the baseplate is large enough and thick enough to be able to hold the scratching post in place. Let’s not forget that these products have been made specifically for cats to be able to climb, scratch and ultimately destroy?
If you are looking for a floor-to-ceiling cat scratching post them from our experience having a baseplate that is less than 60cm x 60cm will simply not be up to the job in hand.
If you are looking for a large cat scratching post that is over 1.5 m in height then we would highly recommend having the diameter of the scratching posts no less than 15 cm. If you have tall and thin cat scratching posts then they will easily break and bend as your feline friend is climbing up the summit.
It is also important that you make sure that the tubing of the cat scratching post is made from wood. If you find a large cat scratching post for under £50 then the chances are that the sisal rope has been stapled onto a reinforced cardboard tubing. Whilst this might save you some money, it will also be reflected in the strength and stability of the cat scratching post.
Personally, we would never recommend purchasing a large cat scratching post that is not made from wood.
For extra strength and stability of the sisal, make sure that the rope has been glued onto the post using a non-toxic product. Many cat scratching posts have simply been wrapped tightly and then stapled at the ends.
If this is the case, it will not require much effort from your feline friends claws to quickly destroy the rope and you will end up with a tangled mess on the floor!
