One thing most owners may overlook is what kind of food can kill your cat. Some feel that if we can eat it so can they. WRONG!
The simplest most natural foods can send them right to the grave without warning. It’s crucial that every owner knows what food they can or can not have. Know the list so you can keep close attention to your trash. Cats are curious by nature and can get into things that you may think is harmless.
One of the foods that cats can’t have is green tomatoes and raw potatoes. These vegetables are high in a poisonous alkaloid and can cause gastrointestinal symptoms. The stems and leaves are even more toxic! Garlic is just as toxic, along with onions and other “smelly” type veggies. These vegetables destroy red blood cells in cats and can cause severe anemia.
No matter how many cartoons you see with cats drinking milk, it may not be a good idea to feed it milk. Most cats are lactose-intolerant. Milk causes bloating, cramps and upset stomach. Thanks to some brilliant people there is a product called Catsip. It’s made from skim milk and has an enzyme added to it to help with the digestion. You can find it in most supermarkets like Albertsons, and pets-mart.
Grapes, raisins and chocolate are toxic to mostly dogs and some cats. I think that you shouldn’t risk it either way. It always depends on the amounts that were ingested.
Theobromine is the substance in chocolate that is toxic to both cats and dogs. The caffeine can increase their blood pressure; induce nausea, seizures, muscle spasms and vomiting. If you find that your cat accidentally came across your Hershey’s chocolate bar make sure you contact a vet immediately. Although toxicity depends on dose it is better to be safe than sorry.
Some medical treatments include IV fluids, Emetics, activated charcoal, anti-seizure medications and cardiac medications. The IV fluids are to prevent vomiting ad diarrhoea while the emetics is to induce the vomiting up to 6-8 hours after the chocolate has been eaten.
Anti seizure medications are for tremors and seizures while the cardiac medication is for an irregular heart rate.
The best medication and treatment is prevention. Make sure you keep your kitty safe and away from these toxic foods and feed it good cat food.
