09 Dec How Much Space Does You Cat Need?
This is a question that frequently gets brought up with our readers here at Cat Tree UK. The answer to which is very similar to trying to find the answer to ‘just how long is a piece of string!’
The reality is, how much space you require your feline friend really does depend on the type of cat that you have.
Other factors include; your feline friends age, agility levels, breed and most importantly, personality!
All of these factors combined play an important role in being able to understand how much space your feline friend requires. Many cats are perfectly content in a studio apartment providing there is enough mental and physical stimulation provided for them.
Generally speaking, cats require far less space than a dog. This is not just a matter of their relatively small size. But, more importantly, it is much more about how your feline friend can manage its energy.
It’s fair to say that dogs could be compared to a marathon runners. They have evolved over the years to become excellent at providing long hours of hard service. Dalmatians for example, were made to run alongside coaches and hunting dogs can happily keep up their energy levels throughout the course of the busy hunting day!
Cats on the other hand, could easily be compared to sprinters, quite the opposite.
Cats have this amazing ability to store energy whilst they wait patiently for pray to cross that paths. Unsurprisingly, the fastest animal on the planet is a cheetah which is part of the feline family. Whilst they can run incredibly fast they cannot run for very long. Timing and strategy is synonymous with the natural instincts of feline friend.
So, what does all this mean when determining just how much space you needs to happily accommodate your feline friends needs?
A long hallway that has been cleared of any obstacles can actually provide plenty of room to play with your feline friends. Rolling some balls down the corridor as well will really excite them and get the heart rate pumping.
An Abyssinian will need more room, and more vertical room, than a Persian for example.
If your cat has a stockier frame then they may require longer and faster runs for them to fully feel as if they had work out. Why not also create a few low jumps as well for them to try navigate through?
CAT TREES are fantastic way if your feline friend to get all of the exercise needs that they could possibly ask for. The problem is, is that they can sometimes take over your entire house and leave very little space left to go about your business.
